PostSubject: Murray Bridge Auto Fest shut down by Police....now we wont get bombarded with info every 3 minutes   Tue 31 Aug 2010, 2:45 pm

This from the front page of The Murray Valley Standard. Thursday August 26th, 2010.

Police have put a stop to the Murray Bridge Autofest, but the event organiser says he will not give up without a fight. Murray Mallee Police superintendant Ian Parrott has written to Autofest operations manager Les Adams to inform him the police would no longer agree to exemptions under the Road and Traffic Act and the Australian Road Rules. The move effectively makes many of the events at the Autofest illegal.

In his letter Superintendant Parrott said he had serious reservations about the safety of some of the Autofest activities.

''I understand the last event was conducted from 22 to 25th of January 2010 at Charles Sturt Reserve Murray Bridge, and included activities such as 'drifting' , 'sprints', and 'burnouts'', the letter stated.

''Each of these activities are considered to be high risk driving behaviour that places drivers, passengers and the general public at significant risk of a fatal or serious injury crash''.

''The location of the event is a public road, which although closed for the event, still poses a number of risks to public safety''

Superintendant Parrott was unavailable for comment.

Mr Adams said he was committed to keeping the event in Murray Bridge and would work with the council to ensure it would be continued. ''We are not giving up without a fight'' he said. ''We have a 10 year agreement in place ( with the Murray Bridge Council) and we want to see that finished and extended''.

He said suggestions the event could be staged at the Murray Bridge Speedway or the Tailem Bend Motorsport Park were out of the question as both venues lacked the infrastructure to support an event like Autofest. He said he could not understand what had changed since the event began 4 years ago.

''Its been okay for the last four years, for the life of me I cant understand whats changed'', he said.

''We will do everything in out power to keep the event in Murray Bridge''.

Mr Adams said the event contributed to more than $3.6 million to Murray Bridge's economy each year.
